The only regret is the absence of the original Act which is vital in establishing the relationship between the infante, Don Carlo, and his betrothed, Elisabetta, who quickly learn that she instead must marry Carlo's father, King Philip II of Spain, for political reasons. Indeed, "Don Carlo," based on a dramatic poem by Friedrich Schiller, holds a prime place in the Verdi canon as a work that shifts between struggles of church and state and the private lives of the principal characters. In no other piece did the composer revel in such an expansive realm of operatic possibilities, which were dictated by the extravagant traditions of the Paris Opera. Intimate episodes rub shoulders with scenes of theatrical grandeur.

The auto-da-fe in Act II (1884 version) is among Verdi's most imposing creations, filled with music of arching lyricism and magnificent pomp. Verdi wrote one of his greatest bass arias for the embittered, aging Philip, "Ella giammai m'amo!" never loved which opens Act III. What follows is the opera's powerhouse centerpiece: the confrontation between Philip and the Grand Inquisitor (also a bass), who demands that the king hand over Rodrigo, the Marquis of Posa, to the Inquisition. Exploiting these sepulchral voices and the orchestra's lowest instruments (bassoons, contrabassoon, trombones, cellos, double basses), Verdi paints a scene of unremitting menace. Rodrigo is the opera's idealistic figure, who calls for Philip to grant freedom to the people of Flanders, which is held by Spain.

As a baritone, Rodrigo possesses music of heightened nobility and ardor, in the vocal footsteps of Rigoletto, Germont and Simon Boccanegra, though some listeners have complained that his arias are conventional. It is an arguable position. But the vibrancy and effortless beauty of Rodrigo's music can't be denied. When he and Carlo sing of eternal friendship, the mellifluous shape of phrases and suave mingling of voices are as thrilling as anything in Verdi. Carlo doesn't reveal much backbone until late in the opera, when he sides with Rodrigo and earns the wrath of his father.

The music Verdi gives to Carlo is fairly typical in tenorial fervor, though extremely refined, as befits the work's French origins. 1, 2003 Elisabetta also only shows her true, compassionate self near the end. She is torn between a pitiful marriage and deep, romantic love for Carlo, her stepson. In the Act IV aria, "Tu che le vanita conoscesti del mondo" who knew the vanities of the she reminisces about past happiness, including her first encounter with Carlo at Fontainebleau (which is confusing, since the 1884 version omits that scene). For sheer passion, Princess Eboli wins the opera's prize.

Vain, jealous, haughty and glamorous, she conspires to win Carlo (she doesn't) and ruin Elisabetta (she essentially does). Eboli wears her feelings on her sleeve, and her two arias especially the superb don fatale" are as seductive and virtuosic as they are truthful and even touching. "Don Carlo" is so complex in a theatrical context that it is no wonder the opera receives only a handful of productions around the world each year. Cleveland last saw a staged version in April 1979, when the Metropolitan Opera presented the work in the 1886 version at Public Auditorium with James Levine conducting a cast that included Vasile Moldoveanu (Carlo), Gilda Cruz-Romo (Elisabetta), Nadine Denize (Eboli), Sherrill Milnes (Rodrigo), Paul Plishka (Philip) and James Morris (Grand Inquisitor). The Cleveland Orchestra is promoting this week's concerts as "the first performance of an Italian opera by the orchestra at Severance Hall since 1935." But members of the orchestra played a concert performance of "Don Carlo" under Levine there in 1971 with a starry cast (Richard Tucker, Gabriella Tucci, Maria Ewing, Cornell MacNeil, Ezio Flagello, Ara Berberian).

Whatever. Hearing "Don Carlo" in the 1884 version should be a sterling opportunity to experience the hard, lumiby this time already had written nous work of a composer who "Aida," the second version of "Simon Boccanegra" and the sublime Requiem. There is, in fact, a direct, if subtle, connection between "Don Carlo" and the Requiem. One of the melodies Verdi dropped from Act II, Scene 2 of the opera's 1866 version became the theme of the Requiem's "Lacrymosa." What a happy case of Verdian same-time-next-year: and company end their 2003-04 Severance Hall season with the Requiem. To reach this Plain Dealer reporter: 216-999-4269 HIRO, RIDGE ROAD CTR.

"For 75 cents, you could see us at the Berea Community Center, out in the middle of the woods." But a funny thing happened to Rocket from the Tombs en route to the black hole of eternal obscurity. The band's legend went supernova.

Rocket didn't record any singles or albums. But bootlegs of the group's material caught on with a cult following, with some unofficial recordings going for up wards of $150 on eBay. "Sonic Reducer," "Final Solution," "Ain't It Fun" and other Rocket tunes became under-the-radar anthems, covered by Guns N' Living Colour and the Replacements, among others. A contemporary alt-rock band from San Diego went so far as name itself Rocket from the Crypt, in homage. "And what's-his-face is doing 'Sonic Reducer' now you know, um, Pearl Jam," Thomas noted.

Eddie Vedder Co. have indeed been bashing out the Rocket gem on tour. Rocket's profile got a boost last year with the release of "The Day the Earth Met the Rocket from the Tombs," a compilation of vintage Rocket material (along with a handful of Stooges and Rolling Stone covers) recorded in concert and at Rocket's rehearsal space. Capturing the group in all its nihilistic proto-punk glory, the rough- edged retrospective earned glowing reviews. The current reincarnation of Rocket from the Tombs tested the waters with a one-off performance in February at the Disastodrome! arts festival in Los Angeles, organized by Thomas.

The Los Angeles Times raved about the band's "explosive, revelatory set." The band broke up no less than three times during the first Disastodrome! rehearsal, Thomas said. Chrome, 48, remembers i it slightly differently: "Well, I don't know if you'd call it breaking up three times. But, yeah, people stormed out, guitars were put down in a rough fashion and people who had quit smoking started again." The original Rocket lineup featured Thomas, guitarist Glenn Hach, bass player Charlie Weiner and drummer Tom Clements. They made their live debut June 16, 1974, at the old Viking Saloon on Chester Avenue. "They were pretty radical," said Dick Korn, former Viking Saloon manager.

He and Thomas were roommates. Rocket from the Tombs "caught people off-guard," Korn said. "People didn't know how to take it. It would energize David to know people weren't getting it. It made him work harder." The band went through numerous personnel changes.

Laughner, Chrome and drummer John Madansky joined in late 1974. Bell (formerly with the Mirrors) came onboard the following year, along with drummers Wayne Strick and Don Evans. The Rocket men weren't exactly hailed as hometown heroes. "Back then, if you were from out of town, people loved you," Chrome said. "But if you were from Cleveland, they didn't want to know about you.

It was like, They can't be any good they live down the street from Even members of New York City's hip Television didn't quite know what to make of Rocket from the Tombs. Laughner brought Television to Cleveland for two shows, July 24-25, 1975, at the old Piccadilly Inn on Euclid Avenue. "There was clearly some talent there, but they were like firecrackers. had fistfights at sound check." A few weeks later, Rocket from the Tombs played a farewell show at the Viking Saloon. Just over a year after it started, the Rocket ride was over.

"We couldn't work together," Thomas said. "Everything Gene did at that point annoyed me and Peter to no end. And everything me and Peter did annoyed Gene. "It was never anything personal. We liked each other." Laughing, he added: "We just couldn't stand each other." Thomas and Laughner went on to form Pere Ubu.

Chrome ended up in the Dead Boys with Madansky and Stiv Bators, who briefly sang with Rocket toward the end of its meteoric career. Both splinter groups salvaged some of Rocket's material. Pere Ubu reworked "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" (No. 35 on the British magazine Mojo's list of the 100 greatest punk singles), "Final Solution" and "Life Stinks." The Dead Boys did "Sonic Reducer" (No. 41 on the Mojo list), "Ain't It Fun" and "Down in Flames." After years of heavy drinking and drug abuse, Laughner died in 1977 of acute pancreatitis.

He was 24. British author Clinton Heylin devoted almost an entire chapter to Rocket from the Tombs in his book, "From the Velvets to the Voidoids: A Pre-Punk History for a Post-Punk World," published a decade ago. He had come across the band's name in a Laughner FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MONSIEUR HIRE AND GIRL ON THE BRIDGE "A MASTERWORK! The best film I've seen this year!" Hoe WALL STREET JOLRNAL. "And like all the great. punk bands, they imploded very. Rocket "only played a few shows in front of a couple hundred people but the fantastic songs they wrote in such a short period created a mystique," said Frank Mauceri, a former Clevelander whose Nevada-based Smog Veil Records label "The Day the Earth Rocket from the Tombs hasn't ruled out mounting another tour in the fall or collaborating on new material. "We're flying by the seat of our pants," Chrome said. He lives in Nashville now, where he has been working on a solo album.

Thomas moved to England in 1984. He still fronts Pere Ubu, tending to a range of other musical and theatrical pursuits on the side. Rocket from the Tombs is, by nature, "doomed," Thomas said. "The blaze of being in something that cannot last but it will burn very brightly before it falls apart is very intoxicating," he said. "We really like the songs.
