[Router] which router to choose?

I currently have the FiOS Quantum Gateway router with the 100/100 internet plan (renting it for $12 a month)...I plan on upgrading to at least the 300/300 and possibly even the Gigabit plan...I'm confused as to which router I should be renting/purchasing...Verizon seems to have a bunch of routers now...I know the G3100 is the newest and best one but when I spoke to customer service on the phone she told me about another router which I can rent for $18 a month...she wasn't sure about the model number but she told me it's the CR1000A

isn't there another Verizon router that's similar to the G3100 but a step down model?...how does that compare to the G3100?...the G3100 is expensive to rent at $28 a month which is why I'm looking at the slightly older step down model...would the G3100 even make sense if I wasn't going with the top Gigabit internet plan?...any help would be appreciated

The CR1000A is the newest and going forward gateway router. Depending on what you subscribe to, you may be able to get it for free. (you don't own, but there's no fee) Some areas are still distributing the G3100. That may also be offered at no cost, depending on what you choose for your Internet tier. There are no other "current" gateway routers offered by VZ. You do have the option of using your own router choice, too. I use a mesh system (EERO in my case) and have the VZ router still in the box on a shelf "just in case".

The G1100 is still supported by Verizon for security updates, but is not actively sold or rented for new customers. It's been around many years (eight, I think.) It works well for gigabit speeds, but it's WiFi and features are a bit dated. It's likely to go out-of-support very soon.

If you really want one, you can find used ones online for not much money. But I wouldn't recommend using it once it goes out of support, as it will no longer get security updates.

If you want a Verizon supported router, go with the G3100 or CR1000A. If you don't care about Veizon support, there are many great options available.

so it costs $28 monthly to rent the G3100?...so which router costs $18 a month to rent?

The CR1000A is the latest Verizon router.

New customers get a "router rental included" with all speed grades. If you upgrade into one of the current plans, I'd expect them to give you the free "rental." If you're on an older plan that they don't offer anymore, you may not get it unless you switch to a current plan. Which may have a different (higher) price.

The E3200 is still available and is compatible with the 1000A as well as the G3100. The promo is/was to be able to lease an extender along with the router for no monthly fee. I bit. The promo may still be available. A check of Verizon's website and/or reaching out to the sales group can provide clarification.

I have the 3100 and three 3200s. This setup works well around the house. No hardware qualms, but my use case is "Plug and Play" with no special programming.

I haven't personally seen the 1000A yet, but expect to once my church is (hopefully) able to order Fios service from Verizon later this year.

The CR1000A is a more capable device which is why it's the newest. It supports beyond Gig speeds for areas that now offer that.

No need to "hear" what they offer. Simply go to their website and read. The current Gigabit plan says "whole-home internet included." That translates to at least one extender. The 500 and 300 plans do not have whole-home internet. They only include the "router rental." I believe all of the current plans are using the CR1000A, as that's what they show in the pictures. They also have sign-up perks for new customers, but you'd likely have to cancel and re-sign up to get them.

If your existing plan doesn't include router rental, you can switch to their new plan and get it. However it may cost more. For example, I'm on a 300/300 plan from about two years ago that is $39.99/mo (w/autopay.) It does not include a router rental. If I want a "free" router rental, I'd have to switch to the current $49.99/mo 300/300 plan. So it would cost me $10/mo more to get a "free" router from them. I won't be switching, as like running my own router.

If you want to add a rental router rental to your existing plan, you'll need to login to your account on MyVerizon and see what it charges you. The rate may vary depending on the specific plan your on.

The CR1000A is the newest Verizon router. Capable of 10 gig Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6e. Latest and greatest.

I have one, which I bought recently brand new on eBay for a fraction of the money Verizon want for it. It was plug and play to hook up, and it works great. I have the Verizon gigabit service for a few years now

It works great with my E3200 extender I already had with my G3100. Hooked up via coax

I looked on the FiOS website and wasn't sure which router came with the non-Gigabit plans because as you said it only says 'Router Rental' but doesn't specify which router that is

the fact that the Gigabit plan comes with the G3100 router makes it seem that the G3100 is the 'best' router even though the CR1000A is the newest router

the current plan I'm on is an older plan which I am grandfathered into- FiOS Ultimate (which comes with all the premiums including HBO, NFL RedZone etc) for a pretty good price which is why I've been hesitant to change plans...I'm currently renting the Quantum Gateway router for $12 month...I've been pretty happy with the router but the wireless coverage isn't as good as I would like which is why I was looking into the G3100 or CR1000A

Not sure what you mean. It’s the same E3200 extender. I swapped the router, from g3100 to CR1000a. That’s it. The E3200 remained where it was, and worked automatically with the new CR1000a router, no further action required

The CR1000A might be a bit overkill for now. Wifi 6e is brandy new tech, and only the latest and greatest hardware support it. It's a good choice if you're planning on upgrading your devices soon, but you need to ensure whatever device you're purchasing supports WiFi 6e, otherwise the faster WiFi 6e tech on the CR1000A is pointless.

One thing I'd recommend, is to buy a second router, and store it as a backup. Whether your main router is being rented or purchased, it's always good to have a second router on hand in case your current router starts having issue or just flat out dies.

The last thing you want is for your main router to die, and you have to wait on FiOS to send you another, or worse, you have to find a replacement on Ebay that could take a week or more to get. I personally have two G3100 routers. Since I was in no rush at the time of purchasing them, my first G3100 I paid $120 for on Ebay a year ago, and my second I paid $60. If you buy yours from Ebay, just sort auctions by "newly listed" and keep checking, it might take a bit of time, but you'll eventually find someone selling one dirt cheap.

Hell, there was a time I had five g1100 router. I just got addicted to buying used ones cheap. It was a bitch reselling them all after I upgraded to the G3100, but I mainly got 1/3 of my overall purchase cost back. Though, all those routers I got were bought dirt cheap. I think I spent a total of $150 for all five, and eventually got back $60 selling all of them. I recall it took me about six months to eventually sell all five, lol.

If you click through to get more details, it shows you a picture of the router. It's the CR1000A.

If you're on an old triple-play or double-play plan, changing speeds may impact TV service. Only Verizon can tell you the details, as they decide what the upgrade paths are and they do not publish the upgrade paths. Your set-top-box models can impact upgrade options, too. Try reaching out to their social media support for a better experience than the phone reps. You can reach them through their FaceBook page, tweeting @VerizonSupport or the VZ Direct forum on this site. Note the VZ Direct forum may vector you to FB and Twitter; if so, please let us know.

The current Gigabit plan comes with a CR1000A, not a G3100. The CR1000A is the newer, more featured router. I haven't tested either, so I can't say if it's "better." It also depends on what "better" means for you. As for why they told you the G3100 is available with gigabit, I'm guessing they may have been talking about a modification within your existing plan. But again nobody here knows exactly what they are willing to offer you as part of an upgrade.

Be sure to price out services on their web site using their current offerings. This will give you a good understanding of how your old plan compares to current plans. For best results, use an incognito browser and plug in the address of a neighbor who does not currently have any fios services. Router rental info will be available as well.

I spoke to FiOS customer support the other day and I can get one of the new routers (G3100 or CR1000A), change internet speeds and keep my current plan but the rental fee for the G3100 is $28 a month which is an insane price...so the rep told me that it would make more sense to switch from my grandfathered Ultimate Plan to one of the new Mix and Match plans

after researching the channels I would be getting + internet it makes more sense in terms of pricing to keep my current grandfathered Ultimate plan...either that or drop cable TV altogether and just keep the Gigabit internet and get something like YouTube TV or just subscribe to the individual streaming services I want (HBO Max, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video)

the Ultimate plan is still the better value but my current internet of 100/100 is not as good as what Verizon offers now (300/300 is their lowest internet tier)...so it's a tradeoff...live sports (NFL, NBA, MLB) is the main reason I keep cable TV

There was an extender offered back when Verizon was installing the G1100 router. If that is the extender you have, then yes, the E3200 is an improvement.

I'm hoping that Verizon will offer a true upgraded extender for the CR1000 router. The one that was introduced with the CR can't be hard-wired like the 3200. The 3200 tops out at 1 Gigabit so it won't be able to take full advantage of higher speeds.

That's what I ended up doing over a year ago. YouTube TV works well for me and my family. I even dropped from gigabit to to 300/300, as gigiabit is overkill for me. I've yet to see a residential use case that really needs gigiabit (beyond bragging rights), so you might want to review if you really need it.

When I switched from a legacy triple play to just-internet, the price delta between 300/300 and gigabit was larger than it is today. And the router/extender "free rentals" were different. I recommend you make the decision based on current price & incentives, as 300/300 is very likely capable of supporting your needs.

when I spoke to a FiOS customer service rep on the phone she told me that the CR1000A wasn't available in my area (NYC- Manhattan VHO5)...she told me that I would be getting the G3100 router...is this correct?...she also told me that the free Extender that comes with the new Mix and Match plan is the Wi-Fi Extender Mini and not the E3200...is the Mini any good?

so there's no point in buying your own router anymore as Verizon no longer charges you for the monthly router rental?

I would spring for the E3200. The mini extender can't connect to the router using cables. The 3200 can which allows for it to be located further away from the router.

There are still reasons to run your own gear besides cost.

Verizon routers can be remotely accessed and managed by Verizon's systems, including the user facing web site and app(s). Some people don't like this access, so they don't use Verizon gear. Some people like it, as it allows Verizon support to help them with problems like "I've forgotten my Wi-Fi password" and other typical non-techie user issues.

Another reason is feature set. The Verizon routers have a good feature set for a typical residential user. Some people want advanced and/or commercial grade features. Some people like using open-source based products.

The great thing about the Ethernet WAN connection is we can each make our own decisions about networking gear based on our needs and budgets.

Note: If you don't use a Verizon router, their support stops at the ONT. For this reason, many folk who don't use Verizon gear keep one of their routers on a shelf. That way they can plug it in if they ever need to prove to Verizon that an issue isn't in the home network.

I checked my FiOS account, and they're still charging $18 monthly for a router. I'm in the NJ area with a 300/300 plan.

What makes you think they no longer charge router fees? Was this something FiOS offered as a promotion, or did they say they no longer charge router fees?

I remember when they did offer their routers for free, but that was when they had the GOD AWFUL Actiontec routers. Those routers were the ABSOLUTE WORST. They ran hot as hell, and I had one die every other year. When I would call FiOS to replace a dead unit, they would try and charge me for a new router, and I would have to threaten to quit their service to get it for free. Then they just started charging a rental fee with the newer routers, and I started to buy my own from ebay from then on.

the cost is pretty much the same as my old FiOS Ultimate plan...the only difference being that I get a faster internet (currently on 100/100)

The current plans include the router rental, just look at their web site.

Remember they almost always let you stay on older plans as long as you want. They never tell existing customers about new plans, even if it would save them money. You should regularly check what new customers can get and see if it's a better deal for you. Use an incognito browser and plug in a non-Fios neighbor's address to see what comes up in your area.

Current 300/300 plan is $49.99/mo including a router (assuming autopay.) If you're paying more than that for service + router rental, you should consider switching plans. If you're paying less and using your own router, don't change anything.

I see, the ol' new customer bullcrap.

Currently, I'm thinking my deal is pretty decent, though I may check and see if I could do better, which I hesitate, as to not screw up my current plan.

My Current Plan:

Internet 300Mbps: $50
The Most Fios TV 2.0: $112
Showtime, Epix, Starz included
Two Set Top Boxes: $24
DVR 12 recordings: $10
Router: Self purchased
Discounts (autopay and others): -$20

TOTAL: $176ish.

Believe me, I'd ditch FiOS TV in a heart-beat, but need it for family peace of mind.

They originally game me the 6 recording DVR for free, but I later upgraded to the 12 recording DVR for an extra $10 monthly bringing the bill up to $176.

I see, the ol' new customer bullcrap.

No, it's not the old "only new customers can get this deal" game. It's simply the current plans are different than the old plans. Existing customers can switch to the new plans at any time, you just have to ask. Of course, you need to evaluate the new plans to see if they make sense for you.

In the old days, the only way to get new customer pricing was to cancel and sign up again either after a few weeks or with another household member. No need for that "dance" any more.

Depending on your TV channel "needs," you may find one of the streaming services has what you need. I switched to YouTubeTV and am saving a bundle. A good portion of the savings comes from the fees I paid for three set-top-boxes; that's all gone now! Everyone in the family handled the switch well.
